MORETTI’S GREAT PLACE IS A SPECIAL DESTINATION
The Perfect Moment in Time! Moretti has
assembled for the sessions truly excels on the new disc. Accompanied by
keyboardist Paul Nagel, guitarist Bruce Bartlett, bassist Marty Ballou,
percussionist Jorge Najaro, and drummer Marty Richards, Moretti has
pieced together a virtuosic ensemble experience. With his accommodating
compositions—all of which except Wayne Shorter’s “Virgo” are
originals—each player enjoys plenty of personal space, room enough to
make this Place an exciting destination for jazz fans.
Kicking off with an intense straight-jazz vibe is "Present Tense"
featuring both Moretti on Tenor and Nagel on Piano. Following is the
soul-jazz flavor of “Avant Blue,” featuring both Moretti, Nagel and
guitarist Bruce Bartlett, the recording traverses through meaty and
substantive grooves, New Orleans funk, swing, and Latin textures, all of
which sound completely comfortable in the hands of the versatile Moretti.
“Monk's Walk a musical tribute to Thelonious Monk shines a light on
Nagel, and Moretti giving that strong and rhythmic New Orleans loosness.
“Rhumba’s Not Home,” is punctuated by Moretti’s soprano sax. “Ten & 8”
which was totally improvised based on a 10 and 8 note sequence adds a
jam-band aspect to the experience, while Shorter’s “Virgo,” a tribute to
the manyVirgos in Moretti’s own life, pulsates with soulful dynamic
intensity.Throughout the recording, Ballou Richards and percussionist
Jorge Najaro provide a solid rhythmic foundation that helps the soloists
find welcoming places in which to craft their performances.
